American Association of University Women
The American Association of University Women (AAUW), founded in 1881, is the nation's leading organization advocating equity for women and girls. Its national membership of 100,000 seeks to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. People of every race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, and level of physical ability are invited to join.
AAUW California was launched in San Francisco in 1886 and began lobbying immediately. It remains the state's most active and diverse organization for women with 14,000 members in more than 150 branches, plus 6,000 members-at-large.
The AAUW Educational Foundation provides educational opportunities and equity for women and girls through research and support of fellowship and grants programs, including International Fellowships, American Fellowships, Selected Professions Fellowships, and Research and Projects Grants.
A special fund of the Foundation is the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund for Women and Girls, which has supported teacher fellows and research on gender equity in education since 1988.
Tech Trek is a math/science camp designed to develop interest, excitement and self-confidence in young women who will enter eighth grade in the fall. It features hands-on activities in math, science and related fields. All sleeping, eating, instructional and recreational facilities are located on a university campus where camps are held.
The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) works to combat sex discrimination in higher education and the workplace. It is managed by our national organization in Washington, D.C.
AAUW's Public Policy encourages women to become involved in every level of the political process. We actively support legislation on educational equity and diversity in public schools, pay equity, reproductive choice, child care, school-based health care, civil rights, and responsible funding for public education.
To further its objectives AAUW has established the Women's Network for Change, a coalition of 28 organizations working together to effect change. AAUW-California also employs a legislative advocate in Sacramento.
The purpose of AAUW is to promote equity for all women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. In principle and practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or class. |
