“Career Transition from Neuroscientist at the Salk Institute to buying Book Works”
Lisa Stefanacci, Ph.D, spoke to members of AAUW Del Mar-Leucadia, describing her transition from neuroscientist to owner of The Book Works in Del Mar. Dr. Stefanacci was a senior staff scientist at the Salk Institute of Biological Studies. She described her interest in how brain function gives rise to emotional behavior and memory -- and her lifelong love of books. In 2006, Stefanacci purchased The Book Works in Del Mar and began using her training and ingenuity to bring fresh ideas to the bookstore, including bringing internationally known scientists and authors to speak to the community in her Science Series.

Guest speaker, Deena Deardurff Schmidt, detailed her life from gold medalist at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, to head coach at San Diego State University, to a lawsuit against the university for discrimination and a fight with cancer. Through it all, Deena kept her sense of humor and zest for living as she worked to give other women a better chance at higher education and well-paying jobs. At our February 2010 meeting, Donna Lily facilitated a dialogue on "The Value of Volunteering for Any Board" for members and guest Francine Busbie.
Our guest speaker for the evening was Sherry Ludwig, who chairs the AAUW California International Advocacy Committee and is the past president of AAUW Fallbrook. Spicing her topic - "How to Soar with AAUW" - with humor, quotes, suggestions, visuals and more, Ms. Ludwig's as entertaining as it was informative.

In November 2009, Judith Flynn, author of "Gumboots, Lesson Plans and Hot Rugby Nights", spoke to members of AAUW Del Mar-Leucadia about her mid-life career transition and adventures in New Zealand teaching ESL students from China. The book describes her seven months in New Zealand teaching, traveling, and learning about the people and the culture.
